Start by Pulling Everything Out

The most effective way to clean out a garage is to pull everything out into the driveway first. It sounds counterintuitive but it forces you to look at everything individually rather than shuffling things around inside. You can see exactly what you have, sort it properly, and only put back what actually belongs in the garage.

Sort Into Three Piles

As you pull things out sort into three piles — keep, sell or donate, and trash. Be honest about the keep pile. If something has been in the garage for two years unused the odds of you using it in the next two years are low. When in doubt it goes in the donate or trash pile.

Handle the Trash Pile First

Sell or Donate What’s Left in Good Shape

Tools, lawn equipment, sports gear, and furniture in decent condition sell well on Facebook Marketplace. List it before the cleanout day so you have buyers lined up. What doesn’t sell by the end of the week gets donated or hauled away — don’t let it drift back into the garage.

Only Put Back What Belongs

When you put things back in the garage be intentional about what goes back in and where. If it doesn’t have a designated spot and a reason to be there it doesn’t go back in. This is the step most people skip and it’s why the garage fills back up within six months.
